What is a fire-rated staff duct?

A fire-rated staff duct is a rigid conduit used in passive fire protection to compartmentalise the technical shafts of buildings. Made from fibre-reinforced plaster, it provides fire resistance up to EI 120 (two hours of stability and resistance to flames and hot gases).

Staff ducts are one of the most reliable solutions for protecting ventilation ducts, smoke extraction ducts, cable trays and pipework passing through building walls and floors. They are specified in the majority of Public Buildings (ERP), High-rise Buildings (IGH) and residential buildings subject to fire regulations.

EXTHA manufacturing: unique French expertise

For over 40 years, EXTHA has manufactured its staff ducts at its factory in Groslay (Val-d'Oise). This industrial expertise allows us to control every stage of production: raw material selection, plaster formulation, board casting, drying and quality control.

Our factory produces the entire range of EXTHAMAT boards, the base material that makes up our staff ducts. This mastery of the production chain allows us to guarantee consistent quality and offer bespoke solutions tailored to each project.

The vertical integration of our business, from manufacturing to on-site installation, is a decisive advantage for our clients. A single point of contact for the entire project, from specification to acceptance of works.

Certifications and applicable standards

EXTHA staff ducts are tested and certified in accordance with the most demanding European standards:

  • EN 1366-1: fire resistance of ventilation ducts
  • EN 1366-8: fire resistance of smoke extraction ducts
  • EN 13501-3: fire resistance classification of construction products and building elements

These certifications guarantee that our staff ducts meet French and European regulatory requirements. Each product comes with its fire test certificate and detailed technical datasheet, available in our downloads section.

Applications of fire-rated staff ducts

Public buildings (ERP)

Public buildings of all categories are subject to strict fire protection obligations. Staff ducts allow technical shafts to be compartmentalised while meeting the fire resistance requirements imposed by regulations. Hospitals, schools, shopping centres, hotels — each type of public building requires a specific approach that our teams master perfectly.

High-rise buildings (IGH)

In high-rise buildings, regulations impose particularly high levels of fire resistance. EXTHA staff ducts, rated up to EI 120, meet these requirements and ensure the compartmentalisation of technical shafts throughout the height of the building.

Residential buildings

Multi-family residential buildings are also concerned by passive fire protection. Staff ducts protect risers, ventilation shafts and pipe penetrations between different apartments and common areas.

EI 60 or EI 120: which fire resistance to choose?

The choice between an EI 60 (one hour resistance) and EI 120 (two hours) staff duct depends on several regulatory and technical factors. As a general rule:

  • ERP of 1st and 2nd category generally require an EI 120 rating
  • Residential buildings over 28 metres require an EI 120 rating
  • ERP of lower categories may only require an EI 60 rating
  • Smoke extraction systems systematically require an EI 120 rating

Installation process

The installation of EXTHA staff ducts follows a rigorous process that guarantees compliance of the installation:

  1. Technical study: analysis of plans, duct sizing, selection of appropriate fire resistance rating
  2. Custom manufacturing: cutting and preparation of EXTHAMAT boards to exact project dimensions
  3. On-site assembly: duct assembly by our qualified teams, with installation of access doors and accessories
  4. Jointing and finishing: application of compounds and EXTHAFIX adhesive to ensure complete airtightness
  5. Inspection and acceptance: verification of installation conformity against fire test certificates

Our installation teams are continuously trained and hold recognised expertise in the implementation of fire-rated systems. This competence is the result of over four decades of experience on French and European construction sites.
