Why fire-rated access doors matter

Fire-rated access doors are essential components in any installation of fire-rated staff ducts and fire-resistant conduits. They provide access to the interior of technical ducts for maintenance, inspection and control operations, while maintaining the continuity of fire protection.

An access door that is not fire-rated, or that is improperly installed, creates a weak point in the building's compartmentation. In the event of a fire, flames and smoke can spread through the unprotected opening, compromising the entire passive fire protection system. This is why regulations require that access doors integrated into fire-rated ducts have a fire resistance rating at least equivalent to that of the duct itself.

The EXTHAMAT TRAP range

EXTHA offers a complete range of fire-rated access doors covering all requirements, from EI 30 to EI 120 classification:

Standard access doors

Our standard range includes access doors in the most commonly required sizes, available from stock for quick delivery:

  • 300 × 300 mm — visual inspection and arm access for light interventions
  • 400 × 400 mm — access for routine maintenance and cleaning
  • 500 × 500 mm — wider access for equipment interventions
  • 600 × 400 mm — rectangular format suited to narrow ducts

All standard access doors are supplied with their installation frame, fire-rated hinges and locking system. They are ready to be integrated into staff duct systems built with EXTHAMAT boards.

Custom access doors

For projects requiring specific dimensions or particular configurations, EXTHA manufactures custom access doors at its Groslay factory. Lead times are short thanks to our dedicated production tooling. Custom access doors are available in EI 30, EI 60 and EI 120 classifications.

Fire resistance classifications

  • EI 30 — 30 minutes fire resistance, suitable for residential buildings and lower-category public buildings (ERP)
  • EI 60 — 1 hour fire resistance, for intermediate-category public buildings (ERP) and mid-rise residential buildings
  • EI 120 — 2 hours fire resistance, for high-rise buildings (IGH), first- and second-category public buildings (ERP) and smoke extraction ducts

The choice of classification depends on the fire resistance rating of the duct into which the access door is integrated. Our technical team is available to advise on the correct specification for your project.

Installation procedure

Installation of EXTHAMAT TRAP access doors follows a straightforward but rigorous process:

  1. Cut the opening — make the opening in the EXTHAMAT board to the frame dimensions of the access door
  2. Fit the frame — fix the metal frame into the opening using screws and EXTHAFIX adhesive
  3. Seal the joint — apply fire-rated sealant around the frame to ensure airtightness
  4. Check operation — verify opening and closing action, check locking mechanism

Detailed installation drawings are supplied with every order. See also page 12 of our product catalogue for complete specifications.

Compliance and certifications

EXTHAMAT TRAP access doors are tested in accordance with standard EN 1634-1 (fire resistance of doors, shutters and windows). Fire test certificates cover the various installation configurations (horizontal and vertical) and classifications (EI 30, EI 60 and EI 120).

All technical documentation, including fire test certificates (PV), is available in our downloads section.

EXTHAMAT TRAP access doors are designed and manufactured in France at our Groslay factory, guaranteeing full traceability and consistent quality for every order.
