What is a smoke extraction duct?

A fire-rated smoke extraction duct is a specialised conduit designed to evacuate smoke and hot gases from a building during a fire, while maintaining its structural integrity and fire resistance. Classified EI 120 S, these ducts resist fire for two hours whilst continuing to function as smoke evacuation systems.

Smoke extraction ducts are an essential component of the natural or mechanical smoke control systems required in public buildings, high-rise buildings, shopping centres and underground car parks. They work in conjunction with smoke vents, fans and control systems to ensure safe evacuation of occupants and facilitate the intervention of emergency services.

Technical specifications

EXTHA smoke extraction ducts offer the following technical characteristics:

  • Fire resistance rating: EI 120 S (two hours, smoke-tight)
  • Applicable standard: EN 1366-8 (smoke extraction ducts)
  • Available cross-sections: from 040×2000 mm to 2000×2000 mm
  • Installation: horizontal and vertical, interior and exterior fire direction
  • Fire-rated grilles: EI 120 with automatic thermal activation (V40, V50, V60)
  • Validated dampers: PALUSOL, PANEL, IRT, ATLANTIC

Applicable regulations

Smoke extraction systems are regulated by specific technical instructions depending on building type:

  • IT 246: technical instruction on smoke control — applies to public buildings (ERP)
  • EN 1366-8: European standard for fire resistance testing of smoke extraction ducts
  • EN 13501-3: fire resistance classification of construction products

Each EXTHA smoke extraction duct comes with its fire test certificate covering all tested configurations. These documents are available free of charge in our downloads section.

Applications

Public buildings (ERP)

Shopping centres, hotels, hospitals, cinemas — all public buildings over a certain size must be equipped with a smoke extraction system. Our EI 120 S ducts ensure evacuation of smoke while maintaining fire compartmentalisation throughout the building.

High-rise buildings (IGH)

In high-rise buildings, smoke control is critical to the safe evacuation of occupants over multiple floors. EXTHA smoke extraction ducts, certified EI 120 S, meet the strictest regulatory requirements for these buildings.

Car parks and basements

Underground areas require dedicated smoke extraction systems due to the absence of natural ventilation. EXTHA conduits designed for mechanical smoke extraction ensure effective evacuation of fumes in these enclosed spaces.
